At this time, we offer you two ways of donating to Maleka Khatoon School.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

Out of the total number of students currently enrolled in the school, only a limited number of students pay to fully cover their fees, books, uniforms, transport, medical checkups, and medicines. These expenses are free for the rest. The goal is free education for all competent students once reliable and consistent funding is in place.

Only 25% of the total annual expense of running the school is covered by fees and other charges paid by those students who can afford it. With funding, the goal is to cover 100% of all expenses.

Each qualified teacher, based on need, is eligible to receive a loan of up to 5000 Taka for medical, home and other unplanned expenses. The loan is repaid each month in 500 Taka installments.

Presently, the school offers classes from Nursery to Grade 5. The goal is to build a second school offering classes from Grades 6 to 12, thereby providing the children with a solid foundation for either entering college or the working world.

HOW IT WORKS

There is one Maleka Khatoon School bank account in Canada and two bank accounts in Bangladesh. The account in Canada is for donations. One account in Bangladesh is strictly for tuition fees and all other fees paid by the parents or guardians of roughly 2/3 of the student population. These fees are minimal and based on household income. The second account in Bangladesh holds money transferred from the charity account in Canada.

In both Canada and Bangladesh, two signatures are required to access the bank accounts. In Canada, they are Shawkot Ali and Terry Dunlap, and in Bangladesh, they are the school Principal and the Acting Chairman.

Terry Dunlap has deposit, withdrawal and transfer authority for the Canadian charity account. In order to access the accounts in Bangladesh, there are two signatures required: the school Principal, and the Acting Chairman.

Donated funds are deposited in the charity account in Canada; tuition and other student fee income are deposited daily during the school week. Once the fees account in Bangladesh has been depleted, money is transferred into the second account in Bangladesh to cover costs of running the school.

In addition to running the school, money in the charity account in Canada will be used for school upgrades, expansion and program growth.

Included in "running the school" are such priority monthly expenses as: salaries (teachers, support staff, rickshaw drivers); school supplies; other operational costs (hydro, maintenance, etc.).

Each month, the school Principal, the Director and the Acting Chairman meet to determine the cash requirements for the upcoming month. Shawkot Ali is informed of these requirements by telephone. He is in daily communication with the school on all sorts of matters, financial and otherwise.

An estimate of human and financial needs is formulated each year and submitted from the Advisory Committee to Mr. Ali. It is monitored monthly and a report is produced at the end of the year.

An audit is performed each year by an accredited accounting firm that visits the school from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
